This week i want to focus on how stress can effect siblings when their sibling has a disability. I do not have any siblings, cousins or niece/nephews who suffer from a disability like autism, muscular dystrophy and so on. Some of my family members had ADD/ADHD and anxiety. I wonder how siblings feel about their siblings who have disabilities. Do they feel like they always have to protect them from other people, bullies and so on? Do they feel any hardship from parents on helping helping them with chores and other things around the house? Do they feel resentment towards their sibling or parent from lack of attention to them? These questions may be slightly hard to think of someone actually thinking about a sibling with a disability. Some siblings may feel this way about another brother or sister. The stress that they may feel at home may be less or more depending on the type of disability.

Jessa, these are some great questions. I have a friend who's little sister is in a wheel chair. She has always been very protective of her. She didn't like it when other people made fun of her. I think that siblings feel like they have to protect each other. Regardless of a disability some siblings feel obligated to look after each other. I think disabilities may make siblings more protective of each other.
ReplyDeleteMallori thank you. I think siblings feel protective because of how people perceive their siblings. I agree, I think they do feel more protective.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if you can find any articles about parental stress over not giving enough attention to the children who do not have a disability because there are so many things to do for the child who does.
ReplyDeleteThis article talks about siblings and other siblings with autism. It also discuss this topic you mentions above. It was very interesting to read.
