This week I want to focus on how stress effects families and their children with autism. Autism ranges from mild to severe. Since my blog is not on autism, I will just focus on how stress effects families and their children. Along with stress there are other factors that come into these families lives, like financial and social issues and challenges. There is a article that I will post below, this article will gives some insight on autism, stress and stress in general. The article gives tips for parents to help them. Some tips were to make a plan, practice staying calm, find family activities and ask/accept help from others. These are some ways on how to not stress when your child has autism. The article has more information on how to keep the stress to a minimum.

  1. I think financial stress and respite care are issues for most families who have a child with disabilities. I wonder what you might find as resources for families in these two areas.

  2. Jessa, I think that financial stress is something that maybe hard to avoid. Parents are often faced with reducing a two income family to one so that one parent can stay home and tend to the needs of thier child. I think that more parents with disabilities might have no choice to turn to this option atleast until they have reached school age. Even still its hard to imagine working full time then coming home to take care of a child with severe autisim. I think the stress of having a child with special needs such as autisim pust a strain on the houshold finances.

I found your article interesting because it considered the whole familes strees , not just the parent or parents. This reminds me of the Family Centered Practice we read in our book. This website is considering and helping the whole entire family.

  3. Dr. Carr- I agree that financial stress may be a lead factor in the stress families may feel. A way for parents to get more information on how to help themselves is by asking their doctors, friends or a therapist options they may have to help them in their financial struggles.

Mallori- I agree, that type of stress may be hard to avoid. Especially if they are both working, they also need to spend time with their child to give them the love and attention they need. If they were to get another job this would add tons more stress to their life.
