This week i want to focus on how parents deal with stress if they have children with disabilities. Parents of children with special needs can have many different stresses depending on the severity of the disability. Since i am not a parent, i do not know the stress of having a typically developing child let alone a child with a disability. I found an article on parental stress with children with disabilities.

The article gave good insight to on how stress can affect parents.

  1. Jessa, I think that families with children that have disabilities need support. I think that families must stay together and support each other. Coummunity based groups should help the whole entire family rather than just the parents. I think siblings deal with stress of thier parents having stress. This article was interesting because I didn't know about they could test salvia to get samples about stress.

  2. I agree, the support can come from anyone who is willing to help. For example: other family members, the community (like you said) and friends. In a family, everyone can feel the stress, so by having someone or a group of people to help, this should lift some stress off their shoulders.

  3. Jessa,
This most recent post is the focus of my blog. My findings from a recent article helped me to discover how parents are better able to manage stress and meet the needs of their children. It reasoned that, a parent can only meet the needs of their children, if they first meet their own needs. Self-care is one of the most effective strategies for parents to deal with stress and meet the needs of their child.
